Ina Sander, member and co-coordinator of the Critical Big Data and Algorithmic Literacy Network, has recently published a monograph on approaches towards critical education about datafication. “Critical Datafication Literacy. A Framework and Practical Approaches” has been published by transcript in August 2024. The open access book presents findings from several years of research, including:

  • an extensive review of existing academic approaches to critical data literacies;
  • an analysis of parallels between critical data literacy and established educational notions, such as ‘media literacy’, the German ‘(politische) Bildung’, and the Freirean ‘Critical Pedagogy’;
  • findings on the range, shape and focus of existing online educational resources about datafication;
  • insights on the resource creators’ goals, pedagogical and design strategies, and experiences in educating about datafication;
  • results from a survey with educators on their experiences with the topic of datafication, and their wishes and needs for online critical data literacy resources;
  • a theoretically and empirically grounded framework for critical datafication literacy.

The book addresses academics as well as practitioners, who are interested in learning more about how critical education about data technologies can be fostered and what today’s citizens should understand about datafication. Besides developing a theoretical framework for critical datafication literacy, the book presents novel findings on formats, pedagogical methods and design strategies for fostering critical education about datafication in practice.
